Oklahoma City-for the 15th time in 16 seasons, the Mavericks, always brave, managed to reach the playoffs.
And just as happened last year and the previous year were team out to first with Monday's loss to the Thunder 118-104 in the presence of 18,203 fans at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.
There is no reason to believe that the Mavericks will endure more than five games next year. If they are ready, even they will really try.
Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson should tell Dirk Nowitzki has been an honor, and Chandler Parsons no grudges.
Without Nowitzki, the Mavs even would approach 35 victories. They would be hopeful in the lottery in what is expected as a deep and full of talent draft.
Even with promising athletic alternatives like Justin Anderson, who had 14 points and three steals on Monday; and Dwight Powell, who added 16 points and nine rebounds, Rick Carlisle would have a big load on top.
The bold Wes Matthews, whose knee problems have limited this season, would be an excellent role model, and the usual figures undoubtedly be rounded alignment.
But if part of the plan is to develop and Powell Anderson, it will be an arduous task.
